Brielle

Project in Rotterdam, so I have to work a few days per week in our office in the harbours of Europoort. I found a nice hotel near Brielle, a little dutch fortified city. Very historic and very quiet. Here a sketch, drawing with fountainpen on site, painted it during dinner immediately afterwards.

Hope you don't mind me asking, but when you say this was sketched with a fountain pen, did you do any initial pencil sketh or did you go straight to the pen?

I used a 0.5 refillable pencil for the important outlines (churchtower, trees, roofs, fountain, cannon), just to define where the main object are. In this case I found that initially I drew the church too large and powerful, and that I had to shift the cannon more to the right than in reality. With that in mind I start drawing with my fountainpen (using Noodlers waterproof ink) including all details. I start with the intermediate part, the house/roofs. In that way I can still use thicker lines in the forefront or thinner and less detailed lines in the back.
Then I walked to a restaurant where I painted it during dinner using a waterbrush. The colours were simple, I did them from memory. In other cases I make small pencil notes.

Thanks a lot, I've been wanting to try this out since I'd seen you and James Gurney doing them, so was wondering about methods for getting an accurate depiction
