Our Castle

Our town has a huge medieval castle, dating from the 13th century, and probably long before that.
It's not a good sign to have a castle like this, it means that there were a lot of wars and gangs roaming this region. You don't need a castle when there is no threat.

An impression of the total complex, the drawing represents the central part. You have to cross three bridges to get there,.

Anyway, I decided to make this drawing today, it was nice and sunny on the terrace across the moat.

It must have been pleasant to sit on the terrace and sketch this scene (perhaps with a glass of wine or beer nearby). The perfect afternoon! I'm not too experienced with castles but this one looks more like a mansion than a fortress. I guess that would make it more of a target for gangs of thieves.

Yes it was nice. As for the mansion, this was only the central part of the castle, looking like a mansion indeed.
I attached an aerial picture of the total complex to the post.
Most old farms in this region are carré built around a central atrium. Outer walls were mostly solid, with slits for weapons to stick through, and often surrounded by moats. So obviously that would be the model of most of our castles.
