Les dessous de Shaya

Business trip to Tarbes, France again. Bottom sketch: view from room 508 of the Rex hotel, always a fascinating panorama. On fridaymorning I got up an hour early to sketch, but the only nice thing I noticed was this shopwindow.

art class 12

Art class, watercolour wet in wet after a live model. I was surprised to find that these splashes of colour really looked like the guy. Some kick.

Garden in the snow

Sketch of some objects in the garden of some friends, Franck and Hellen. I was struck by the contrast of the red masonry and the cool coloured snow.

Ray Bradbury

Ray Bradbury's book "the martian chronicles": that was the kind of science fiction I loved when I was young. Unfortunately I lost the book; but last summer in London I retrieved a copy in a specialised bookstore.
When I read it, I remembered that in my schooldays me and my friends used to make random ballpoint scribbles in our schoolbooks. And we challenged each other to make some drawing out of it, something like "Europe after the rain" by Max Ernst.
After opening some dusty boxes I found this sketch back, dating from about '74 (bottom drawing).
For me this drawing is the visual representation of the world described in the "martian chronicles". And I could not resist redoing the drawing in my moleskine, 35 years later.

Albina's book

A moleskine exchange book got lost between the Netherlands and Russia. I remade 2 drawings, one from Thalia (Peru) called "flowers" , and my own called "Jonas and the whale".

Eekhoorntje

This little squirrel was eating the nuts we left in the birdhouse in our garden. The birds did not seem to mind.

art class 10&11

Week 10 was pastels; I was not pleased with the result. Now moving to watercolour, experiments in wet-in-wet, that's more to my taste. Experimenten in nat-in-nat.

Weihnachtsmarkt

Yesterday I visited the Weihnachtsmarkt in Aachen. It was freezing. This is next to the reibekuchen und backfish stall Fuhrmann.
Gistermiddag op de Kerstmarkt in Aken. Vrieskoud, zelfs de Glühwein hielp niet meer.

Art class 8&9

The results of art class of two weeks ago was horrible, to be forgotten quickly.
But I kind of liked the drawing of last saturday: see above, a drawing of the teacher herself.
Drawing from life is very hard, also considering that I have to master new techniques like pastel as well.

Leenderheide

While driving to Amsterdam, to the Simple Minds concert, we got caught in a hailstorm near Leenderheide. It was 16.55, Gertie was driving. I made a quick scribble, and made the drawing at home, by memory.
