Sjrapnelle

During this years Carnaval parade my wife and her frend Yvonne won the 1rst prize. Unfortunately there was only one trophee, a little statue. I made this small painting of the statue, so they both have a throphee at home.

Scheveningen

I noticed I forgot to post a few drawings.
Here is one I made on our recent visit to Delft; some idiots bungee jumping off a pier above the sea, in Scheveningen. It was beautiful beachweather

Brielle

Project in Rotterdam, so I have to work a few days per week in our office in the harbours of Europoort. I found a nice hotel near Brielle, a little dutch fortified city. Very historic and very quiet. Here a sketch, drawing with fountainpen on site, painted it during dinner immediately afterwards.

Brazil, diario do Comercio

Some of my drawings were featured on the site of a brazilian newpaper, Diário do Comércio. So were drawings of Rob Carey and Joseph Tomlinson. Amazing how drawings keep popping up in the most remote parts of the world, in this case Sao Paulo.
Thanks to Leo Gartsbeyn (New York) for tipping us.
Kleine wereld.

Landscape

Two more results of the landscape workshop on the hills over Eys. We tried to achieve depth using colours with the same intensity.
Just before we had this nice cool Weizenbier.

Overeys

Last saturday our art class went to Overeys, overlooking the hills of our region, for a nice warm day of drawing and painting. I made 5 watercolours, 1 pencil and one large (horrible) pastel painting. Here you see the view we had, and a picture of Maria and Pam of our group, under strict guidance of Annemiek.

L'inhumaine

L'inhumaine is an old experimental French black and white movie, from 1924, in which a guy drives his car on long and winding streets. I used the wraps of a package A4 printer paper from our office, to paint and draw the car as I remembered it from the film.

Final Matisse

Painting like Matisse, the final version. 80x110cm, acrylic. The painting does not even come close to a real Matisse painting, but I tried to figure out how Matisse treated subjects and composition. Front versus background. Colour and form. Quiet and turmoil. To be honest, before I did this,I never really liked Matisse, but now I learned to enjoy his works. Schilderen a la Matisse, een oefening in compositie en onderwerp. Het resultaat van vele weken zwoegen.

Erasmusbrug

Rotterdam, view from the ship. Between the buildings you see the Erasmusbrug (a.k.a. the swan). Rotterdam, getekend vanaf de SS. Rotterdam.

Cruise ship

SS Rotterdam, where I had to spend the night last week.
When I was seated in the restaurant and eating tagliatelle with vongole and salmon, I realised the Euromast was nicely framed in this window.Time to sketch.
I also did the view over the nieuwe maas from the ship, but I am not very pleased about the result.

SS Rotterdam

Rotterdam yesterday.
Poor me, all hotels were overbooked, due to the world championship ping-pong; so I had to spend the night in a luxury cruise ship..... The S.S. Rotterdam is a former Holland-NewYork liner, which is restored in all its beauty and is now in use as a hotel. Looks better than these floating apartment blocks you see across the Mediterranean. From its deck it has the most beautiful view across the water and the city lights of Rotterdam.
Remark: there was a general problem with blogger: they removed all posts and comments since wednesday.

Delftse vogels

Molslaan in Delft. We were sitting at a terrace sipping cofee where I saw this guy on the other side of the canal gulping down a tin of icecream. It looked like he was famished. The swan did not get anything from him.
Just a few meters away a "meerkoet" (a coot ?) was mothering her offspring. The father was in constant fight with the curious ducks and seagulls.

More Delft

View over Delft from our hotel room. Uitzicht over Delft vanuit onze hotelkamer. Geen hollandse luchten met dit mooie weer.

Delft

My wife and I had a nice long weekend in Delft, The Hague and Scheveningen. The weather was fantastic. I sketched this while drinking coffee on a terrace on the Beestenmarkt in Delft, you can see the "new church" (it's what you call new....it dates back to 14-15th century....) through the trees. It's the second highest churchtower of the Netherlands, the one of Utrecht (see the sketch of a week ago) is the highest.

Utrecht

Koninginnedag, Queens day, which was last Saturday, April 30th. There are all kinds of  festivities all over the country. We went to Utrecht to enjoy the freemarkets, music, food and wonderfull weather. I think it was the best weather in a century. I drew this sipping coffee on a terrace next to one of the canals: it shows the highest churchtower of the Netherlands.
At the Freemarkets the locals try to earn some euro's by selling old stuff, or homemade food, involve you in silly games or making music. These kids had a smart idea: they wanted to get rich by sleeping....
Koninginnedag en vrijmarkt in Utrecht, afgelopen zaterdag. Wat een geweldig weer!

Brenda en Mart

Last friday my son Mart and his girlfriend Brenda had their "Gala" evening. The final schoolexams will start shortly, and the Gala is the last school event where they can party with their comrades.
It's fully dressed up event in first-time-smokings and black dresses; they are brought to the dinner place in fancy cars where they get the flashlight and red carpet treatment. And then dinner and dance.
Seeing them both in something else than jeans and sneakers, it's a sight to make any parent proud.
