Jurong Island

On Wednesday we visited the building site for the new chemical plant I am designing. It is located on Jurong Island, an artificial island of about 30km2, just off the coast of Singapore city. The island is dedicated to heavy industry like ports, oil tanker parks and chemical plants.
There is heavy security before you can enter the island, sometimes taking more than an hour for making passes and security checks. For some reason you are not allowed to bring cameras to the island, so I had to fall back on pre-digital era tools like pen and ink. A quick sketch of the Lanxess building site.

Ook hier zien wij het bewijs dat niet altijd digitale technologie de voordelen heeft. :)

Het klinkt als een interessant projekt.

Beautiful sketch! Hope you could come back to Singapore and sketch more, or even better, join our local Urban Sketchers group for a sketch walk! :)

Here's our blog site:

Thanks Ludek.
Edric, Tia already granted me access to your USK Singapore group, I will post there as well the coming days. I wish I could join you in that walk, I know you have a very active group, but business trips leave little time for other activities. For the Orchard road sketch I had to go out at 7am, before breakfast. Thanks for visiting.

Very nice, Rene. You may remember I was almost arrested for trying to sketch a chemical plant in France, but I'm sure since you are the designer, you had special privileges!

No privileges I am afraid. My colleague had his camera with him; but it was confiscated at the security check, even before we entered the island. It cost our visiting group (including the client's general manager of the construction team) about an hour, without getting it back. Mind you, we all carried smartphones with cameras in them.....
