Schacht Nulland

An afternoon sketching outside again. One of the few remaining artifacts of the former coal mining industry in our region. One of the ventilation shafts and elevator shafts of teh Domaniale Mijn in Kerkrade.

A nice sketch, Rene. The lines and tones are light except for the tree in the foreground which frames your composition. The building is also an usual structure which attracts our attention. It’s also a good piece of local history.

One of the few relicts of my past. There was a coalmine (about the largest in the Netherlands) 700 meter from my house. Gone, not a trace left. They built an elderly home on the location of the old shaft. My 92 year old mother lives there now. Strange how history evolves.....
